Executive summary

3 operating principles
  1. 01

Use public discussions to discover reader questions, not as copy to republish.

  2. 02

Verify claims independently, add original analysis and preserve relevant context and attribution.

  3. 03

Measure what the workflow actually shows without claiming that derived content will be cited.

What this workflow is for

Public Reddit discussions can help a team notice recurring questions, language and unresolved concerns. They are research leads—not a license to copy posts and not proof that an AI model will cite content derived from them. A responsible workflow uses those observations to produce independently verified, original material that helps the intended reader.

This is an editorial process guide. For the separate task of checking an AI answer’s source links, see how to inspect Reddit URLs in AI citations.

A four-step editorial process

1. Find a real reader question

Search public discussions that are relevant to your audience and note the date, context and exact question. Read the surrounding conversation so you do not treat an isolated comment as representative. Follow subreddit rules and avoid private or restricted spaces.

2. Verify the substance independently

Use primary documentation, direct product testing, or a qualified subject-matter reviewer to check factual claims. Community votes and personal accounts can offer context, but they are not fact checks. Keep dissenting experiences and limitations where they change the conclusion.

3. Add value beyond a paraphrase

Create something useful in its own right: a decision checklist, worked example, troubleshooting flow, comparison with transparent criteria, or a concise answer with a clearly stated boundary. Do not reproduce user language at length. Obtain permission where required, attribute sources where appropriate and follow platform terms and applicable rights.

Choose an existing page if it already serves the intent. Our topical-map guide explains how to check page roles and intent overlap. Add the new insight to that page when it fits; create a separate URL only when the reader need is distinct. Link to related material where it helps someone continue, and label opinion, observation and verified fact clearly.

Example: turn a question into an editorial brief

Research noteEditorial decision
Several public threads ask why a tool’s output differs between runsExplain which settings and inputs can change results, using the vendor’s current documentation
One commenter reports a personal outcomeTreat as an anecdote; do not generalize it into a product claim
A thread includes an unresolved technical claimVerify it against primary docs before including it; otherwise label it unverified or omit it
Existing site guide already answers the questionUpdate that guide and add a contextual link instead of publishing a duplicate page

This example describes a method, not a finding from a measured Reddit sample.

Measure what the workflow can show

Review whether the article answers the intended question, contains accurate sources, and gives readers a useful next step. Search performance can be measured in Search Console when connected. AI answer citations require separate, repeatable observation: log exact prompts, product modes, retrieval dates and source URLs. Do not report a citation or ranking result without collecting it.

A page may be useful even if no AI answer cites it. The workflow should justify its cost through reader value, editorial accuracy and the business role of the page—not an assumed citation outcome.

FAQ

Does republishing Reddit comments create AI citations?

There is no documented guarantee. Copying user content can raise rights and attribution issues; create original work and follow the platform’s rules.

Should every repeated Reddit question become a new article?

No. First check whether an existing page can answer the need clearly. Create another page only when the intent and useful content are distinct.

Can upvotes verify a technical claim?

No. Votes show community engagement. Verify technical and consequential claims against primary sources or qualified review.

How do I know if an AI system cited my content?

Inspect an answer that visibly links to the page and record the product, mode, prompt and date. A brand mention without a link does not establish that your URL was cited.
